Every South Asian woman has heard it: “Just drink haldi doodh, it’ll help.” Or, “Chew ajwain seeds, you’ll feel better.” Our kitchens are full of remedies passed down through generations, golden milk for sleep, methi seeds for digestion, and saunf tea for bloating. And while many of these rituals carry real wisdom, they also need to be understood through the lens of modern science.
Midlife and menopause bring unique challenges: hot flushes, night sweats, fatigue, mood swings, and joint pain. Our mothers relied on what they had: herbs, spices, oils, and rituals. But today, we have the opportunity to blend ancient remedies with evidence-based approaches for the best of both worlds.

The Wisdom of the Kitchen
Turmeric is anti-inflammatory. Ajwain aids digestion. Fennel helps cool the body. Shatavari, long used in Ayurveda, supports hormonal balance. These remedies can soothe, comfort, and nurture, especially when integrated into daily rituals of tea, food, and self-care.
But they are not cure-alls. Drinking haldi doodh won’t fix severe insomnia. Ajwain water won’t heal clinical depression. And methi seeds can’t reverse osteoporosis. When we rely solely on “what our mothers did,” we risk ignoring symptoms that require deeper attention.
The Role of Modern Support
Today, we have access to:
- HRT (Hormone Replacement Therapy) for those who choose it has been shown to relieve hot flushes, protect bones, and improve quality of life.
- Supplements like vitamin D, magnesium, or omega-3s to support mood and bone health.
- Therapies like CBT, acupuncture, or somatic practices to ease anxiety and insomnia.
- Lifestyle medicine: movement, nutrition, and rest, proven to improve long-term well-being.
The best care is not either/or. It’s both/and. A turmeric latte for comfort and a conversation with your GP. Saunf tea for bloating and regular exercise. Ashwagandha for stress and therapy for deeper healing.

Why Blending Both Matters
When we combine the wisdom of our ancestors with the tools of today, we create a care system that is both culturally rooted and medically effective. We honour our heritage while giving our bodies what they truly need.
