Menopause Midlife

Menopause Matters: A Month to Empower South Asian Women in Midlife #MenopauseAwarenessMonth

October is Menopause Awareness Month, a time to highlight a natural life transition that still carries shame, silence, and misunderstanding, especially within South Asian communities.

For many women in midlife, menopause is not just a hormonal change; it’s a full-body, full-life transformation. Yet, South Asian women often face this journey feeling isolated, misinformed, and overlooked. At The Sattva Collective, we believe it’s time to shift that narrative, to move from secrecy to solidarity.

Why Menopause Awareness Month Matters

The aim of Menopause Awareness Month is simple: to educate, raise awareness, and break down stigma. But for South Asian women, this mission holds a deeper cultural weight.

In many of our families, we were taught to endure in silence. Menstruation was whispered about behind closed doors. Mental health was ignored. And menopause? Often brushed aside as “just one of those things”, an inconvenience not worthy of support or discussion.

This collective silence means that too many women go through menopause:

  • Without knowing what perimenopause is
  • Misdiagnosed with depression or anxiety
  • Struggling with relationship and identity shifts
  • Feeling “lost” in their own bodies

Let this October be different. Let this be the month we name our symptoms, claim our space, and reclaim our power.

What the Research Shows

Recent studies show that:

  • South Asian women may experience an earlier onset of menopause than their white counterparts, sometimes in their early 40s.
  • There is a higher prevalence of joint pain, fatigue and sleep disturbances among Asian women.
  • Cultural expectations to be ‘strong’ and put family first often delay health-seeking behaviour.
  • Many South Asian women face barriers to hormone therapy (HRT), such as misinformation or fear of judgment.

In short, we are under-supported at a time when we most need care and connection.

How Menopause Impacts Life in Midlife

Menopause can affect every part of life:

  • Physical health: from hot flushes and weight gain to hair thinning and osteoporosis
  • Emotional health: anxiety, mood swings, low self-esteem, or feeling invisible
  • Cognitive function: brain fog, forgetfulness, and mental fatigue
  • Relationships: changing intimacy, roles at home, parenting teens or supporting elders
  • Workplace: difficulty concentrating, lack of policy support, and stigma

Add cultural expectations of duty and silence, and it becomes clear why so many South Asian women feel like they’re falling apart when in fact, they’re navigating a natural, powerful shift.

Five Empowering Actions for South Asian Women this October

  1. Educate Yourself and Others: Learn about the symptoms of perimenopause and menopause. Share information in your community, temple groups, and family chats.
  2. Seek Culturally Competent Care: Ask your GP about menopause-specific support. Don’t hesitate to advocate for yourself.
  3. Build a Circle of Support: Find or create a space with like-minded women where you can share your journey safely.
  4. Normalise the Conversation at Work: Speak to HR about menopause-friendly policies. It’s your right to work in an understanding environment.
  5. Honour Your Changing Self: This isn’t the end of your story; it’s a sacred new chapter. Journal. Meditate. Dance. Connect with your inner wisdom.
